BREEDS
Purebred
Belgian Malinois
Fun Fact: In the 1970s, the Secret Service
created the K-9 division, which paired specially trained dogs with handlers, or K-9 Technicians. These special dogs have been trained to detect drugs, explosives, and firearms. Although German Shepherds were first used, the Secret Service now uses only Belgian Malinois dogs from Holland. Known for their adaptability to new climates and environments and their work drive, these dogs are exceptional members of the Secret Service. They generally work 7-11 years in the Secret Service and grow to an average 75 pounds. At night, after a busy day's work, they go home with their handlers, where they are a part of the family.

Bichon Frise
Fun Fact: Bichons have tons of hair!!! They do not shed and are very neat. They have very thick coats that need CONSTANT maintenance if you want your pup to be mat free. But daily grooming is a time to share and bond so your Bichon will love you heart and soul :)
My BBF loves our daily cuddle and groom time.
Border Collie
Fun Fact: One of the most intelligent dogs on the planet.
Love their humans.--Lisa in Waianae

Boxer
Fun Fact:
The Boxer is a great family dog, famous for how good they are with children and has boundless energy and charm. They are a primarily indoor dog, as they get very attached to their owners and their short nose means they can only
stand being in the hot sun for short periods of time. They also require plenty of exercise, as I take mine on nightly runs with me.
If you are interested in learning more about this wonderful breed, visit www.boxerclubofhawaii.com. We have a free on-line yahoo group and frequently get together for dog events, AKC dog shows, hikes, playdates and much more. We also have T-shirts and other items to benefit the club, a registered 501(c7) non-profit organization.
The attached pictures are of my Boxer Shamrock. One is me in uniform. I am in the Navy and standing in front of the USS Boxer, not named after a Boxer, but thought it would be cute to have a Boxer in front of the ship. USS Boxer has adopted the Boxer dog as their official mascot.
The other photo was taken at Maunawili Falls in Kailua. Shamrock had a great time splashing around the waterfall.

Miniature Bull Terrier
Fun Fact: Spuds MacKenzie made this egg-shaped head breed easily recognizable from the late 80's in Bud Light commercials. Bull Terriers can be extremely stubborn but very loyal to their family which can easily include multiple species if properly socialized.
"Kalua Puppy" lived with numerous cats, many other dogs and even birds. She happily shared anything she had, with the exception of her floppy bunny which was never out of sight or reach.
Cane Corso
Fun fact: Incredibly protective of his/her own family. Can be the biggest pushover or your worst enemy.....
This is our boy Diesel at 10 months old.

Chihuahua
Fun Fact: Chihuahua’s brains are the largest of any breed, when compared to the size of their bodies.
This is Chico. He is an AKC blue merle Chihuahua born and bred here in Hawaii. Perfect companion!! We love Chihuahuas!! --K.W. in Kapolei

Chinese Shar-Pei
Fun Fact: The Chinese Shar-Pei is a very unique breed. And as soon as you bring them home they form a strong bond with their family. They are layed back and very loving and intelligent animals. And when they sleep more then likely you will hear snoring.....

English Bulldog
Fun Fact: Not much of a secret but Bulldogs are major snorers.....
Allie is a 4.5 month old baby being spoiled rotten by the Amis family.

Fun Fact: They love to play in water splinkers, and they love to cuddle.
English Staffordshire Terrier
Fun fact: Originates from England and is affectionately known across the U.K. as the "nanny dog" because of their loyal and affectionate relationships with children. They are the only breed in the world that has a reputation of suitability with children and rarely show any signs of aggression to humans. Staffies are extremely loving and always want to be near their family-buy they also need lots of
exercise, as they are little bundles of ENERGY!!
Spike, our almost 3-year-old staffy. Spike enjoys running, jumping, cuddling on the couch with his family, riding along in the car, going out to the sandbar, and most of all – eating, sleeping, and acting like a human!

Great Dane
Many Great Danes are thrown away. People don’t seem to understand that Great Danes are giant, powerful dogs. One of the commonest periods for this breed to be surrendered to a shelter or rescue organization is after they are 9 months old, as people neglect to factor in the potentials of a still rapidly growing 100-pound dog that, because of his age, still acts like a crazy puppy.
This is Koa he was rescued at 11 months and adopted into his family where he now thinks he is one of my kids and not a dog. One really fun fact about Danes are they tend to back up and "Sit" on furniture.
Jack Russell Terrier
The breed says it all. Rocko is crazy, hyper, and it sometimes feels like he may have A.D.D. However, he is very intelligent. In fact, when he sees anything shiny, he tries to find any reflective light that it may emit. Also, he is so quick he can catch a fly in mid-air.
Maltese
This is a picture of my 5 month old pure breed maltese. Her birthday was December 9, 2008. She is a sassy little girl that actually likes to take pictures. I have attached two of them that was taken after I personally groomed her and she hopped onto her favorite "blankie". You may choose whichever one you like best - I like them all so it's hard for me to choose.
FUN FACT: Bella is a single-coated, hypo-allergenic, white (of course), pure bred Maltese. Bella loves to play with her squeaky toys (especially balls of all types) and is quite content with just resting in my lap after a long day at home with her 50+ toys. I give them to her in rotation at 10 toys each week. Then I rotate them out so that she doesn't get too bored with any one specific toy. She loves the movie "Firehouse Dog" and cries when Dewey gets chased by the dog-catcher. She's awesome and we enjoy every minute with her!
Miniature Dachshund
Fun Fact: Dachshunds were bred to hunt badgers. They make wonderful watch dogs and have a very loud bark. They have a keen sense of smell and hearing. They are very loveable little dogs and are very stubborn which makes it hard to train them.
I love this breed just because they are so challenging and every day is an adventure!

Miniature Pinscher
My dog is a pure breed min pin... she loves to stand on the steering wheel while we drive... she always like to see where were going when we are in the car... soooooo cute
Her name is Ikea.... I soooo love her.... she is my baby!!!
Rottweiler
Fun Fact: Rottweilers are not naturally aggressive, but protective and can easily be trained to be guard dogs. The aggression is a learned trait to attack, bite or bark when unwelcome individuals enter the property. Rottweilers will instinctively protect their families and do not need encouragement to defend them. Rottweilers are known to be one of the most loyal dogs. Rottweilers originated from
Germany. Rottweiler naturaly hearding dogs, but are naturally great guard dogs. Tempermant depends on the owner and their training!
Enjoy this video! Lets put a stop to hating certain dogs for their breeds!
Russian Toy
Fun Fact: Also known as the Russiky Toy, this
breed is very rare outside of it's native homeland of Russia with only a few dozen in the united states. They get along well with other pets and have a long ear fringe like a Papillon with the size of a chihuahua.
Shetland Sheepdog
Fun Fact: They are very talkative. They love to herd children. They are very clean.
(both pups are 4-5 months old ,tri-color & a blue merle)-Lisa in Waianae

Siberian Husky
Fun Fact: The Siberian Husky is a medium
to moderate size working dog of northern heritage. Quick and light on his feet and graceful in action.

Loves to go running and showers me with kisses and loves to go to dog shows.

West Highland White Terrier
Fun Fact: While smaller, this breed is extremely sturdy and muscular with a deeper bark. They came from Scotland where they were used to hunt vermin. Hunters on horseback would carry them in wicker baskets on their saddles and throw them on the ground when prey was near. Their chubby tails were used to pull them from vermin holes once they cornered the prey. They have a few genetic health problems like allergies and skin problems...Some others that are not that common are copper toxicosis, jaw calcification and hip dysplasia.
First let me say that I am not a dog person. I never thought I would own a dog... Then I met my neighbors Westie, McDuff, and fell completely head over heels in love. I searched and searched for
one of my own and finally found Meagan Rae at Pet's Central in February of 2006. She came to live with me on my birthday, February 5th. Best present EVER. So this is my West Highland White Terrier/Westie, Meagan Rae. She's 2 years old. She weighs about 19 pounds. She thinks she's a big dog, has tons of energy, spunk, is constantly cheerful and is too smart for my good. Very good at problem solving. I've known several Westies besides Meggs and they've all been healthy, extremely cheerful dogs. Meggs had frequent bladder infections as a young puppy. She has had some skin problems which went away as soon as I changed her diet eliminating beef, pork, soy and all grains except for brown rice. She loves fruits and veggies including sweet potatoes. She is otherwise very healthy and perpetually happy. I call her my anti-depressant. Meggs absolutely adores children and cats and loves chasing things. She's a great watchdog but wouldn't be a good guard dog as she loves EVERYONE she meets. I am totally in love with this breed and eventually want to start up a kennel and breed Westies concentrating on bettering the genetic lines. I created a myspace hoping to get in touch with other Westie owners and have found them to be a wealth of breed specific info.
Crossbreeds

American Bandog (Pitbull/Mastiff)
I don't think ArtiDozer knows his breed background was to be a large protection/guardian dog. Now 90 lbs, he still thinks he should be a lap dog. He loves chasing water, including rain drops, and climbing as high as he can on anything available.
Artemis Dozer @ 7 weeks old

Chihuahua/Fox Terrier
This is my dog Rocky he's 2 years old and lives in Kailua with his mommy Kelly and daddy Jovan. He's the best dog that i have ever owned... He's chihuahua/fox terrier, and got lots of energy and loves to play with his toys!!! I must say...he's got the biggest ears and the biggest heart ever! He was also just featured in the fall edition of hawaii island dog magazine! Thanks, Kelly

She's named after one of my favorite native Hawaiian plants, the A'ali'i. Her nicknames include "Stinky" and "Cow." Loves to play fetch and swim at the beach. Very affectionate and protective.
Pitbull/Beagle Mix
My dog is one of a kind. She is extremely intelligent and learns very quickly. Makana really loves people and other animals and is the best family dog! My dog is very affectionate and loves to cuddle, her favorite position is right between her mommy and daddy! Oh, and she is the most beautiful dog i have ever seen!
